"We wanted to make sure we were working together with the organization to set everyone up for success," Purdy told reporters Wednesday, according to The San Francisco Standard's David Lombardi. "It wasn't about me just getting as much money as I could."
Purdey ultimately signed a five-year, $265-million extension that includes $181 million guaranteed and a full no-trade clause. He said he was golfing with his wife and center Jake Brendel when he learned the deal was finalized.
The 25-year-old has exceeded expectations since being selected with the 262nd and final pick of the 2022 draft, earning the moniker of "Mr. Irrelevant."
Purdy has compiled a 23-13 regular-season record as a starter, as well as a 4-2 mark in the postseason. He guided San Francisco to an NFC championship and a trip to Super Bowl LVIII in 2023.
"I have had success in this league and have shown I can take a team all the way to the end, to the Super Bowl," Purdy said, according to The Athletic's Vic Tafur.
Purdy has started 36 of his 40 career games, ing for 9,518 yards and 64 touchdowns with a 104.9 er rating. The Iowa State product has also rushed for 480 yards and eight scores across his three NFL seasons.
When asked if he left money on the table during contract negotiations, Purdy said: "I think we ended up where we needed to be," per Lombardi.
The 49ers parted ways with several veterans this offseason following a 6-11 campaign in 2024. Notable departures include Deebo Samuel, Javon Hargrave, and linebacker Dre Greenlaw. However, San Francisco pivoted to re-g several starters, handing multi-year extensions to tight end George Kittle and linebacker Fred Warner.
Purdy itted that bringing back most of the Niners' key leaders from last season has given the club a "reenergized feeling around the facility."
