Randy Johnson will forever be encapsulated in Seattle Mariners history after the organization announced Monday it'll retire the "Big Unit's" No. 51 in 2026. eb2a
The exact date of when the ceremony will take place is set to be announced after the 2026 schedule is finalized.
"Randy is both one of the greatest pitchers in Major League Baseball history and one of the most important figures in our organization’s history," Mariners chairman and managing partner John Stanton said.
"During the 1995 season that changed the future of this franchise, his 18-2 record (in a 145-game season) was properly recognized with his first Cy Young Award."
Stanton continued: "Randy's extraordinary accomplishments will forever be ed and recognized with the retirement of his number 51."
Johnson came to the Mariners in a 1989 trade from the Montreal Expos. The towering left-hander went on to spend 10 seasons with Seattle, winning 130 games and accumulating 2,162 strikeouts. He also threw the first no-hitter in franchise history on June 2, 1990.
He'd go on to win four more Cy Youngs and throw a perfect game after leaving Seattle, finishing his Hall of Fame career with 4,875 punchouts.
Johnson's No. 51 will be the fifth number retired by the Mariners in franchise history.
