Los Angeles optioned outfielder Matthew Lugo to Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday to clear an active roster spot for Trout's return.

Trout has been sidelined since May 2 because of a bone bruise in his left knee. He was originally injured while trying to beat out a ground ball during the Angels' April 30 game in Seattle.

The 33-year-old has been working his way back into game shape in recent days. He ran the bases Wednesday more aggressively than in previous days and faced a minor-league pitcher at Angel Stadium, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County .

Injuries have ravaged the three-time AL MVP over the last several years. Trout hasn't appeared in more than 130 games in a single campaign since 2019 and missed most of 2024 after undergoing two knee surgeries to repair a torn left meniscus. This season, the Angels moved him to right field from his longtime position of center in an attempt to keep him healthy.

Before his latest injury, Trout hit .179/.264/.462 with nine homers and 18 RBIs over 29 games.

The Halos have managed a solid May without their superstar, going 13-13 so far. However, since reeling off eight straight wins earlier in the month - a run that included a sweep of the rival Los Angeles Dodgers - they've come back to Earth and lost five straight contests.
